Examples and Tutorials How to make a Glitch in Adobe After Effects
Before reading the tutorial in this article, it would be nice to listen to the sample video below which is a little different on how to create a glitch effect using the Red Giant Universe & Animation Composer plugin.
Tutorials How to make a Glitch in Adobe After Effects
First open the Adobe After Effects application, then create a New Composition on the Composition> New Composition menu.
Enter the name Composition, set the desired video size, and also set the duration.
For this new composition, please type the desired text. To create text use the Text Tool (Ctrl + T) then click on the Preview window.
So that the text is in the middle, you can bring up the Title / Action Safe in the form of lines as a Guide. Please place the text at the center of the line.
In the Project window, right-click and select Import> File, then select the Screen Glitch video file.
Now, drag this Screen Glitch video to the Timeline.
Go to Layer> New> Adjustment menu to create a new Adjustment layer in the timeline.
In the timeline, select the Adjustment layer and go to Effect> Distort> Displacement Map.
In this Displacement Map setting, change the Displacement Map Layer to a video Screen Glitch.
In the timeline, hide the Screen Glitch layer by clicking on the eye icon on the left.
Now, take a look at the Preview window. Press play or the Space key on the keyboard.
Return to the Displacement Map parameter, then increase the Max Horizontal Displacement and Max Vertical Displacement values to 40.
Now, try playing again and see in the preview window. Now, the Glitch effect appears bigger.
Ok, now we will create this Glitch effect as a Transition or as an intermediate effect for moving text. For that, create a second text again using the Text Tool.
In the Timeline window, select the text "Text 1", then drag its edge (end) so that it only reaches 2 seconds. View image . . .
Now, select the second text then drag its tip (start) to second 2. Here, I make the text change from “Text 1” to “Text 2” in the 2nd second by setting the start and end edges as above.
Ok, now the final step is to select the Adjustment Layer and then move the left and right edges closer to the 2nd second as shown below, so that this layer is short in the Timeline. Make sure the center of this layer is aligned with the displacement of the two text layers, namely at the 2nd second.
The result is simple, yes, considering that here we only adjust the Max Horizontal-Vertical Value. If you want a more any result, maybe you can try experimenting with the different parameters of the Displacement Map effect.
Using four Adjustment Layers (with a Displacement Map effect) with different Max Horizontal-Vertical values, and using the Masking technique so that only certain parts of the text are affected by the Glitch effect.
